In the second part of my recent post I discussed how the technology industry is changing quickly and will become even faster. What I didn’t mention was how rapidly the tech industry is changing from a place where the average age of a worker is 18 to one where the average age of a worker is in the forties. This is a big change and it’s one that is largely due to globalization.
Globalization is the process by which the technology industry merges with other industries without a common language. It can be a positive or negative thing. For instance, Apple’s iPod has become a global phenomenon because of globalization and the ability to copy music onto different devices. However, in the same way that the iPod has become global, the computer industry in general has been slowly but steadily growing.
Globalization means two things. One: the ability to take advantage of economies of scale. The iPod is a good example of this because as a single unit, it works great on the small budget pocket. But you can make money by making copies, something that Apple can’t do. Two: the availability of cheap computers. As long as you have a computer, you can afford to learn new skills. But, as the computer industry grows, so does the price of computers.
With this in mind, it is only a matter of time before we start seeing a new type of company emerge. Currently, college students can start a company for a few hundred dollars. But will it be a company that makes a living off its students or one that hires them to do it? As the computer industry grows, it will become a $1000 dollar a year company. And as it becomes a $1000 dollar a year company, then who knows what other jobs the future will bring.
Although we don’t yet have an exact date to tell you about, we do know that it’s going to be a big industry. Companies are going to be hiring college students even before they’re online, and we’re likely going to see a new type of college that’s just as good as the ones we’ve seen in the past.
I dont know if companies are going to hire college students to work at a computer company, but they are going to be hiring college students in the tech industry. In this new industry it will be common for college students to be hired to work in any number of roles. In the beginning, it is going to be a very specific, niche industry. But as the industry grows and companies become more general, then the need for a new type of college will come.
