In fact, working in information technology can be a very flexible job and a very successful one. This is because working in information technology means you are working with people that are more than just “technicians” and don’t just “do this,” but actually have a deep-rooted understanding of the people and processes that go into their daily work.
That said, getting started in information technology is a very challenging endeavor and can take years. What makes a good tech person is to be able to learn and to stay current with the knowledge that is passed on from one generation to the next. What makes a bad tech person is to just do what they’ve been doing for years and not learn anything new.
I would say that’s an extreme case of the bad tech person. For every good tech person there is a bad tech person. What we need in an information technology team is a mix of people that can be taught to focus on new things, and a mix of people that can learn and improve on something that already works.
Although there are some people who are only good at one thing, there are also people that are only good at one thing and just don’t know how to be a good tech person. In general software knowledge is knowledge that can be used to solve problems of various flavors. Some of the things we teach our students are things that were previously obvious to us, but were unknown to us. For example, a lot of the time, the “best” software knowledge comes in the form of algorithms.
This is a good example, as well. It’s always amazing to see “how-to” manuals that teach you how to do things you’ve already done, rather than just telling you how to do them. It’s often because of this that we can use a lot of the information we’ve learned in these tutorials to do things we wouldn’t have thought of doing to begin with.
One of the things that we had to give up after our last game was our ability to talk to characters. This was particularly frustrating because we were always given voice commands, and we never used them in the game. Now we have a guide that tells us how to talk to characters, and it works great.
